August 2000

Our July meeting at The Columns was a homecoming for a long time Gateway member, Senator Franc Flotron. Since first becoming a member of the Missouri House and presently the Senate, Franc has been very busy in Jefferson City; however he took the time to stop in and update us on aviation legislation at the state level. He also talked about our favorite subject: flying! It seems that Franc's family has been into general aviation for two generations since his father and sister were also pilots. With Franc currently running for U.S. Congress, it may be even harder for him to visit in the future. Senator Flotron also reminded us to get to know our representatives before we need them to become involved with a specific issue. He told us how your letters can make a large difference when it comes to influencing a bill in the legislative process. It will do us well to remember that advice in the upcoming session when the Airport Protection Bill and the Bill to exempt Mo. based airlines from the fuel tax are expected to come up again. It was good to see Franc again and we hope he can find the time to return to some of our future meetings.

MEMBERS - Also at our meeting, we were able to congratulate Harry and Joe Ann Schulz on a memorable milestone; they celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary last month!

We welcomed four new members at the meeting; Bob Kraemer, Bill Darnell and Dan Kholer. Although not present, Steve Palmer also recently joined. Welcome to Gateway Chapter, guys and we look forward to seeing you at the meetings!

Library News - A big "thank you" to Harry Schulz for donating a fifty dollar gift certificate for King School and big "thank you" to Don Moonen who won it as an attendance prize and donated it to our chapter library. There are some generous people in our great chapter! Chapter librarian, Tony Petruso, will choose and order something from the King School catalog. If you are interested in checking out any of the video tapes or books from our library, call Tony's and Rosemary's store at 314-423-6644 or visit Tuesday through Saturday.

FLY-OUT - The Sikeston fly-out was a big success with eight planes and eighteen people making the trip. As usual there was more to eat at Lamberts than we could hold and the shuttle service they provide to pilots was most appreciated (not to mention the one-quart mugs they gave us!). Do join the fun at our next fly-out on August 20 to either Bloomington or Decatur, IL. Brian Brinker will make the decision by then so be at the meeting!

Eating - Although I forgot to ask the entire group, I did get mostly favorable feedback from several members about our new dining schedule at the meeting. We opened the entire buffet line around six thirty. There were a few who also preferred our previous method. We will try the new procedure again at our August meeting and take a vote on which way you prefer.

Friends of KSUS unite! There is a move afoot to start a Spirit of St. Louis Airport support group. If you are interested, contact Chris Erkmann at 636-532-6076. There may be a barbecue in the works.

Friends of KSET party! Kilroy's restaurant at Smartt Field will have an open house on Saturday, August 19, with the River City Blues Band from noon until 4:00.

Our August meeting promises to be a memorable one! Larry Barklage, Manager of the St. Louis FSDO, will be there to make a special presentation to one of our members. You will have to come and find out who and why! Our new state president, Jerry McClure is making a special trip to St. Louis to meet the Gateway members in person. Jerry will be available to answer any questions or listen to any suggestions you may have regarding the MPA. And finally, our speaker is someone we all know: Jim Byrnes! As you may know, Jim has been working on a book for some time now and was persuaded to give us a sneak peek. He will tell us some of the many humorous stories that will appear in the final version. When someone has been involved in military and civil aviation for around sixty years, he is bound to have met some interesting characters and had some funny experiences. Please come and enjoy the activities and meet your friends and the people that contribute to aviation! The doors to The Columns will open and the buffet line will start at 6:30 p.m.. The program will begin at 8:00. For your dining pleasure we will have fresh fruit tray, minestrone, baked chicken, baked cod w/ lemon sauce, rice pilaf, Italian green beans, hot roll and pineapple sherbet.

Your reservations for The Columns are required by Monday evening, August 7, so I can confirm the number with The Columns on Tuesday morning. Please call Jean Murry at 314-469-3541 to make those reservations and while you are at it, invite a friend along!
