We really enjoyed Brian Weiler's visit with us at our July meeting. Brian took time from his busy schedule with the Missouri Department of Transportation and his family to update us on the latest aviation legislation in Jefferson City and the status of airport projects in the St. Louis area. He is really very knowledgeable and a fount of information. Since Brian was recently appointed the acting director of aviation, rail and docks with MoDot, it will be even harder to get him in the future. We thank him for sharing his time with us at Gateway and wish him well with the Dept. of Transportation.

Rick Albrecht, Doug Geldbach, Walt Petring, Linda McCullough and Jan Pocock graciously volunteered and have been appointed as a committee to investigate a tribute to our member, Jim Byrnes. It has already been decided to dedicate the 2003 convention to Jim. We look forward to their initial report at the August meeting.

Gateway members are involved in a contest to name the 2003 convention theme. The winner will receive two free meals at a chapter meeting plus the honor of being named as the winner! The winning theme should be announced by our September meeting. In case you were not at our July meeting, a contest form is included with this newsletter and can be turned in at the August meeting or mailed to me.

Planning for the 2003 MPA State Convention is well underway and the dates of
June 6, 7 and 8 have been approved by the Gateway and State Boards. Mark your calendar for next year! A large "thank you" from Gateway to the Saint Louis Chapter for their generous $100 donation towards the convention. If you wish to contribute towards the convention, please contact me, our Officers or any of our Board of Directors. All contributions are deductible and will be advertised in the convention literature.

A silent auction as a fund raiser was discussed at the July meeting and several members are willing to contribute, however we still need a volunteer to head it up and very soon. The auction will help raise the funds necessary for convention related expenses. If you are willing to help, please contact me.

There was enough interest in a Fall picnic that a motion passed to have one. No date was set and a picnic will have to be in addition to our regular dinner meeting at The Columns due to our contract. A concern was expressed about dividing our attention between the silent auction and the picnic; therefore the discussion will continue at the August meeting.

fly-out to Cadiz, KY on July 21, was a success despite the intense heat. V.P. and Fly-out Chairman, Brian Brinker reports that about fourteen members and guests with five aircraft made the trip and had a grand time flying, eating and visiting. Notice that our next trip on August 18, has been changed from Jeff City to Dexter, Mo. (DXE) with arrival time set for 12:00 noon. Please join us and bring your friends! Call Brian for details, coordination and empty seat info at 314-647-1138 at least a day ahead of time.

Just a reminder that the annual Open House for Zenith Aircraft in Mexico, Mo. is scheduled for August 24, from 8:00 AM until 3:00PM.

A reminder: if you are on the permanent dinner reservations list, please remember to
call and cancel if you are unable to attend. This thoughtfulness saves your fellow members from paying for your meals, eating extra calories, gaining weight and reducing payload capacity.

Gateway member, Mr. Harvinder "Harry" Pujji, will be the guest and speaker at our August 14, meeting at The Columns. Harry is a Designated Flight Examiner and will be talking about what he and other examiners look for in their check rides. This is good information for flight instructors and their students preparing for check rides. He will also have a Q&A session afterwards so bring any friends that might be interested. We have all been pulling for Harry since the debacle with the national level of the FAA (he is fully supported by the STL FSDO) and this is an opportunity for you to also show your support for him.

Please join us August 14, at The Columns in St. Charles. The dinner menu will consist of:
a fresh fruit tray, minestrone soup, pork loin w/red bell pepper sauce, fried catfish, rice pilaf, Italian green beans, rolls and short bread cookies. Dinner is still $13 per person. Social time begins at 6:00 PM, the serving line opens at 6:30 and the program begins at 7:30. As usual, dinner reservations are required and can be easily made by calling Jean Murry at 314-469-3541 by Monday evening, August 12, or better yet, call now - before you put this newsletter down. Please come and bring your friends for the food, fellowship, hangar flying and to learn how to prepare for your next check ride.
