The rainy weather departed just in time for our Annual Picnic at Smartt Field. Rick and Gen Albrecht volunteered their great musical talents once again. Lori Cotton, owner of Kilroys Restaurant, and Jill did a great job of preparing the fried and grilled chicken and drinks. There were many covered dishes, desserts and a watermelon thanks to the members. Due to the uncertain weather only Don Kramme and Joe and Debbie Malkowski flew their planes in, but Bob Kraemer opened up the C-47 for tours. It turns out that several of the guests have had a connection with a C-47/DC-3. A big "thank you" to everyone that helped and to those that showed up for a fun evening! Several members had so much fun that they suggested doing it again this Fall. We can discuss it at the next meeting
Most of you are aware by now that one of Gateway's founders and a great man in aviation has departed. Mr. Jim Byrnes passed away on May 31, with his family at his side. It won't be the same without Jim to guide us. Our deepest condolences to Jim's family. Gateway will appoint a committee to investigate a fitting tribute to Jim and per his wishes, Gateway will also provide a contribution to the MPA Educational Endowment Fund. A tribute to Jim was read at the June MPA Board meeting in Columbia and is reprinted in the current issue of MPA News. We will miss Mr. Jim; however for those of us that flew with him, Jim will be with us each time we fly.
We are also saddened by the passing of Richard Barklage on June 19, 2002. Rich was a helicopter pilot and reporter for local radio and television stations and the brother of Larry Barklage of the St. Louis FSDO. Our sympathy and support are offered to the Barklage family.
On a lighter note, planning for MPA's 49th Annual Convention has begun. A few meetings have been held and the major planning and investigations are underway. We are narrowing down the selection for the date, hotel and host airport. A major consideration will be contributions for the door prizes, registration packet goodies, printing and other miscellaneous costs. If you can help out, please contact me. We will also need a Convention Chairperson soon. We are always looking for help, ideas and contributions, so please join us during the planning stage.
At the July meeting we are going to announce a contest to choose the theme for the convention. 2003 is the 100th anniversary of powered flight and the 50th anniversary of MPA's founding. There should be something to build a theme around, so put on your thinking cap!
Our Father's Day fly-out to Gaston's Resort was a mixed success. Fourteen people in five airplanes completed the trip with a rain delay on the return leg. Un-forecasted moderate rain, lowering ceilings and visibility around Cuba, Mo. caused me to turn back to Smartt Field but others from Creve Coeur and Spirit airports managed encounters with light rain and made it through. The next chapter fly-out will be July 21, to Cadiz, KY. Check with the Fly-out chairman, Brian Brinker, at 314-647-1138 for details and an empty seat report.
Many of you are familiar with Angelo Sgroi, sometimes known as "Michelangelo", at St. Charles Municipal. He has been well known for aircraft refinishing, painting, upholstering and interior finishes for many years. While talking with him recently I found out that his son, Mark, now has AIR CARE Aircraft Wash and Wax. It is a mobile operation that will come to your plane then wash, wax, vacuum, clean the windows and provide other options. Mark also does the same for most motor vehicles. I understand that it is the only mobile cleaning service in the area at this time. Mark's phone number is 314-412-6643 if you would like your aircraft or ground transportation cleaned up.
Our guest and speaker for the July 10, meeting at The Columns in St. Charles will be Mr. Brian Weiler, Administrator of Aviation for the Missouri Dept. of Transportation. If you want to learn the latest plans and developments for our local and state airports and to hear, first hand, the political developments concerning aviation in Jeff City, then you want to come, meet and listen to Brian. Brian is also a pilot and former airport manager so he truly understands the importance of his job. You can also come and thank him for the new state airport directories that have just come out (see your airport manger for a copy).
Please join us at The Columns in St. Charles. The dinner menu will consist of: tossed salad, chicken and rice soup, chicken Marsala, sliced roast beef in BBQ sauce, herb whipped mashed potatoes, honey glazed baby carrots rolls. strawberry shortcake, and lemonade. Dinner is still $13 per person. Social time begins at 6:00 PM, the serving line opens at 6:30 and the program begins at 7:30. As usual, dinner reservations are required and can be easily made by calling Jean Murry at 314-469-3541 by Monday evening, July 8, or better yet, call now - before you put this newsletter down. Please come and bring your friends for the food, fellowship, hangar flying and to learn about the current status of airports, legislation and aviation in Missouri.
