March 2001

Notice: The March 14th Meeting starts at 6 PM.

Gateway's Valentine's Day meeting was well attended by the gentlemen and lovely ladies in our chapter. Shirley Petring's table centerpieces highlighted the gift exchange. Not only did she make them once for Christmas, but she re-made them for Valentine's Day. That's determination! You may recall that we had to reschedule the gift exchange due to the bad weather in December and Valentine's Day was a perfect time to do it. Bill Nelson did a great job of hosting the event again and was even able to remember whose turn it was amidst all the fun. Several gifts really made the rounds during the evening! Thanks to Bill and all the wonderful people that participated in the fun.

We did manage to get quite a bit accomplished at the meeting. The chapter's board of directors agreed to provide several door prizes for the upcoming State Convention. The Convention was discussed and registration forms were available. We hope a large number of Gateway members will attend again this year. The September MPA Air Derby was discussed and Tom Butler had preliminary sign up sheets at each table to help get an idea of how many would participate. More details on this later.

Also a nominating committee consisting of Jim Byrnes, Dr. Bill Sill and Walter Gummersheimer was created and will present a slate of candidates at the April meeting. The officers and three Board members' terms will expire in May. Normally the committee would have been created at the March meeting, but there will not be a business session then due to the program.

We amended our fly-out schedule slightly. The trip to Reelfoot Lake has been moved one day so we can also attend the Kingdom City Chapter's Pancake Breakfast on May 12. See the Calendar of Events in the local newsletter for the new dates. They are our newest chapter and really are eager! It will be a nice Saturday morning trip to Fulton for breakfast.

Chapter librarians, Tony and Rosemary Petruso showed us the six new video tapes (In The Cockpit Series) acquired for our growing library. See or call them (314-423-6644) to check out items. The Petrusos also brought their collection of WWI and WWII sweetheart pins and Valentines to display. The collection filled a large table and Tony said that was only part of the total collection! Thanks for sharing that with us. I'm sure there were many people at the meeting who had not seen how deeply the great wars affected everyday lives during those times.

The St. Louis Chapter is assisting EAA Chapter 32 on May 12th with a major Young Eagles Day at Spirit Airport and have asked if a few Gateway members would like to help out. One of the MPA's charters is to promote educational activities within the state for educational and civic purposes. A large group of students and teachers are expected to attend and EAA Chapter 32 is planning on flying some 300 Young Eagles on this day. The large Arch hangar, now owned by Thunder Aviation, will house numerous displays as well as providing activities for the Young Eagles. In addition to flights, tours of the new FSS will be provided. There will be a limited number of aircraft on static display. Due to the large numbers expected this event will not be advertised to the general public. Volunteers are needed to help with registration, serving hot dogs & soda, assist with refueling, driving vans to/from the FSS for tours, etc. If you would like to spend an enjoyable day or part of the day helping, please contact Richard Baricko by email or call him at 636 458-4576. Thank you.

A new MPA member has e-mailed me the following question. "I'm a recently-certificated private pilot who is looking to join a partnership / co-ownership / flying club or starting a new co-ownership with an existing sole owner. My preference is for a four-place single-engine fixed-gear plane based at Spirit or Creve Coeur but I'm open to other possibilities. I'm an engineer at Boeing -- I have a good work ethic and skills, but a limited budget. If you know of anyone that might fit the bill, would you mind passing along my contact info to them? Gary Bond or 314-963-7295." Can any one help this member out?

Our menu for the March meeting will consist of :

tossed salad, beef barley soup, prime rib, baked sole w/ dill sauce,
parslied potatoes, green beans w/ apples, hot rolls and key lime pie.

Remember the serving line opens at 6:00 PM this time only.

The March 14, meeting promises to be interesting! Fred Schieszer from CMSU has spent many years investigating and documenting the disappearance of Amelia Earhart. His presentation could last up to three hours and we anticipate an unusually large audience. For that reason, the doors will open at The Columns and serving will start at 6:00 PM. The program will start at 7:00 PM and we will not have a business meeting that night. We will be using the larger room (to your left as you enter) this month. Please phone Jean at 314-469-3541 for reservations. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED so that we have the proper amount of food available. Click the logo below for more details.
