September 2000

Wow, what a meeting! For a peak vacation month, the large turnout of sixty-four people at our August meeting was a real tribute to our honored guests. To begin with, our members introduced themselves to the new MPA president, Jerry McClure. Jerry spoke briefly about forthcoming state aviation legislation we need to watch concerning our airports. We thank Jerry for traveling from Springfield just to meet everyone and we hope he will come again and bring Nancy! Jerry is a retired Navy aviator and currently teaches in a Springfield school. By the way, we need to say a word of thanks to out going president, Larry Harmon, for all his hard work on behalf of MPA during the last three years. We hope both of you gentlemen will visit with us again.

Our next guests were present to honor the newest Central Region Flight Instructor of the Year. Joe Dobronski was presented a plaque by Randy Robinson, from the FAA's Central Region. Larry Barklage and Fred Harms from the St. Louis FSDO were also present to congratulate, Joe. We are honored to have exemplary aviators like yourself in the Missouri Pilots Association. It was nice to have Joe's wife and some of his family with us for the occasion. If you are new to the area, check out Joe's book, A Sky Full of Challenges at the link on the Gateway's web page <www.mopilots.org>

Our featured speaker for the evening, Mr. Jim Byrnes, has been working on a book for several years and we learned that it is now at the printers and should be available by our September meeting. Although we will have to wait a little while to get a copy, we were able to persuade him to tell us a few of the stories that are included. We also learned that as an aviation cadet, Jim appeared in the movie WINGED VICTORY with Alan Ladd. We really enjoyed listening to some of the adventures he has had in over sixty years of flying, but the time was far too short. Since the meeting, I have learned that Jim's book will be titled; Jim Byrnes - Flight Instructor, and that he should have several copies available at our next meeting.

Also among our guests were Bob Boelling, president of the St. Louis Aviation Museum, and his son. We welcome them anytime!

AWARD - Gateway chapter is honored with many volunteers that work behind the scenes each month. We honored one of them again at the August meeting by presenting the Co-Pilot of the Year Award to Jean Murry. Congratulations Jean and thank you for your hard work!

Fly-Outs - The August chapter fly-out to Bloomington was a victim of low ceilings and thunderstorms and was weathered out; however Brian Brinker and several others from Creve Coeur did make a short hop over to Smartt Field and Kilroy's for lunch. The next scheduled fly-out is shown in the Calendar of Events and will be to the Old Thrasher's Convention in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Call Brian at 314-647-1138 to coordinate or to see if there are any available seats.

Members - We are sad to report the passing of one of our lifetime members, Edward P. Evers. Ed passed away from natural causes on August 16. The Gateway chapter sent a memorium to the Boy Scouts of America in his name and received a nice thank you letter from them.

WINGS - Please remember to turn your WINGS forms in to Carl Schaffner (636-947-4804) or give him a copy of your WINGS certificate so you will be counted in the contest.

Next Meeting - Our speaker at the September 13, gathering will be Roy Beisswenger telling us about flying powered parachutes. You may have seen a story about the powered parachute fly-in at Greenville, IL on television recently. The Column's doors will open at 6:30 pm and the serving line opens around 6:45. The program begins at 8:00. Dinner reservations are required so why not invite a friend and call now! Please note the different telephone number for reservations this month only.

For your dining pleasure the menu will consist of: tossed salad, beef barley soup, sauteed top round w/ mushroom sauce, fried catfish, O'Brien potatoes, peas and carrots, rolls and chocolate cake. Why not make your reservations right now? Please note: for September only, please phone your dinner reservations to me (Chuck Maggart) at 314-731-0199 by Monday evening, Sept. 11. Jean is taking a well deserved vacation! Please let us know if you have any special diet requirements when you call.
