Herb Roberts introduced our July speaker as a friend in the Marine Aero Club. Any friend of yours is a friend of ours, Herb! Jay Henning is a Lieutenant in the Shawnee Mission Squadron of the Kansas Civil Air Patrol, an IFR rated pilot and instructor, and mission pilot. Using slides and handouts, Jay presented us with some interesting facts. CAP is a corporation operating under USAF; it was formed in 1941 to patrol the coasts; after WW II it was phased into search and rescue; now it is big in aerospace education. His is a composite squadron made up of 12-18 year olds as well as adults. All members are volunteers, get aircraft time flying missions, and use five 1980 vintage C-172s and a C-182. All are IFR equipped and have an FM radio for contacting other CAP aircraft and ground vehicles involved in searches. They also have direction finding equipment to locate ELTs. Most ELTs picked up by satellites are traced to the trunks of cars speeding down highways, garages, dumpsters, and at airports at which a hard landing was made. Many actual saves are made each year. Jay recommends filing a VFR flight plan, or if qualified, an IFR flight plan. Don't forget to close it. In the "destination contact" block, use the tower's phone number if available. Also, don't forget to check 121.5 before leaving the aircraft. Your landing may not have been all that smooth!

August 22 - Our speaker for August is Mr. Wilmot "Dusty" Rhodes. Mr. Rhodes will talk about an aircraft launch system he was acquainted with called the Brodie system. I believe this system was tried during or just after the second world war.

S outh		 In the last 3 years there were NO accidents involving a WINGS participant. Just looking at this information, isn't it worth the 3 flying hours and a safety meeting to avoid a costly accident? Participate in the WINGS program. It's better than a BFR.

MO-KAN Wings Contest - Remember - Get ready for next year. All non-pilot members should attend a safety meeting and have a WINGS card signed. These are needed for our inter-state rivalry with the Kansas Pilots Association (KPA). The KPA is very serious about this contest and won the trophy (furnished by Ed Duckworth) last year. All non-pilot members should send their signed wings card to Penrod Turk.

The State Wings Contest runs from April 1st thru March 31st each year. Let's make the WINGS year WINGS Safe. All it takes is one hour of air work, one hour of takeoffs and landings, one hour of instrument and a safety meeting. It is the responsibility of each chapter WINGS Chair to keep track of all their WINGS participants. So -- please -- keep Chapter Wings Officer, Penrod Turk, informed upon the completion of any phase. MPA Board Meetings - This is a reminder that any member can attend our chapter board meetings . They are held on the first Tuesday of the month, excluding holidays, at Executive Beechcraft, Downtown Airport, at 7:00 P.M. We always welcome your advice and assistance, and the hospitality is great.
