At the November 14 dinner
meeting our guest speaker was Chuck Zuvers who explained the Wings of Mercy program as sponsored by the Ararat
Shrine in Kansas City and managed by the "Flying Fez." The Kansas City Ararat Shrine is the only Shrine
Temple of 191 in the United States to own and maintain their own aircraft. As most people know, the Shrine is recognized
for the three hospitals for burned children as well as their 19 other hospitals for children suffering from cleft
palate and orthopedic problems. The Flying Fez use their plane to transport children, at no charge, to various
of their hospitals, but especially to Chicago, Galveston, and Cincinnati. About 1 flight per week is averaged,
obviously with each round trip taking a minimum of 1 full day. Flights routinely depart at 5 a.m. and often do
not return until very late at night. Each flight is handled by a volunteer pilot-in-command as well as a fully
qualified co-pilot volunteer and will transport the child along with a parent or guardian. The plane is hangared
at Downtown Kansas City Airport at Executive Beech. It is a 1986 Cessna-206 and is fully equipped with all of the
latest aviation technology. All maintenance of the aircraft, all expenses incurred for each flight, as well as
all medical treatment for the child is covered by the Shrine. Chuck described some of his personal experiences
with brave children who have faced their problems. Chuck obviously is proud of the Wings of Mercy program and finds
it very worth his volunteered time. Pam Ratliff

MO-KAN Wings Contest - Remember - Get ready for next year. All non-pilot members should attend a safety
meeting and have a WINGS card signed. These are needed for our inter-state rivalry with the Kansas Pilots Association
(KPA). The KPA is very serious about this contest and won the trophy (furnished by Ed Duckworth) last year. All
non-pilot members should send their signed wings card to Penrod Turk
The State Wings Contest runs from April 1st thru March 31st each year. Let's make the WINGS year WINGS Safe.
All it takes is one hour of air work, one hour of takeoffs and landings, one hour of instrument and a safety meeting.
It is the responsibility of each chapter WINGS Chair to keep track of all their WINGS participants. So — please
— keep Chapter Wings Officer, Penrod Turk, informed upon the completion of any phase. (4 West 112th Street, Kansas
City, MO 64114-5304)
