Kansas City Chapter
President: Herb Roberts -Vice-president:
Steve Crisp-Secretary: June Williams-Treasurer: Tim McDermott, Directors: Paul Broome,
Here's possibly a true story with a message to pilots as well. Last summer, down on Lake Isabella, located in the high dessert, an hour east of Bakersfield, California, a blonde (of course), new to boating was having a problem. No matter how hard she tried, she just couldn't get her brand new 22ft. Bayliner to perform. It wouldn't plane at all, and it was very sluggish in almost every maneuver, no matter how much power she applied. After about an hour of trying to make it go, she putted over to a nearby marina. Maybe they could tell her what was wrong. A thorough topside check revealed everything was in perfect working order. The engine ran fine, the outdrive went up and down, the prop was the correct size and pitch. So, one of the marina guys jumped into the water to check underneath only to come up choking on water, he was laughing so hard. REMEMBER, this is purported to be true...... Under the boat, still strapped securely in place, was the trailer. There's a message for us in this story. How many times have we heard of pilot's taking off with Pitot covers still installed, gear and control locks still in place, and even tow bars hanging from the front gear. We have a lot more to lose than that blonde, boat driver. Fly safe. Herb
Congratulations to Chapter Member Bob Sternecker. Bob was honored with the FAA Master Mechanic Award.

JANUARY 26, 2000 - Our guest speaker in January spoke on a subject more to do with heavy iron than light aluminum. Never the less, Susan Lockette, Customer Services Manager at Kansas City International, told us of red coated or polo shirt clad individuals going around the airport telling people where to go and where to get off. And the recipients of the advice are grateful! Well, actually, as KCI Airport Ambassadors, they volunteer their time and knowledge about the airport and city to help travelers find their baggage, rest rooms and other facilities as well as restaurants, hotels and attractions. After passing qualification screening, they receive training and are paired up with experienced Ambassadors before they are out on their own. The program is spreading through other airports in the country, and has certain benefits besides the satisfaction of helping visitors to our area. Susan invites anyone interested to call her for more information. Al St. Germain

|In 1996 there were 1,907 General Aviation (GA) accidents. Of all these accidents, only 2 involved pilots who had participated in the WINGS program during the previous 12 months! Each accident had an average cost of $30,000 dollars. Just looking at this information, isn't it worth the 3 flying hours and a safety meeting to avoid a costly accident? Participate in the WINGS program. It's better than a BFR|
