Left to Right: Steve Davis, Larry Wahl, Allen Martens, Tom Bartel & Ernie Jarvis

Our May meeting was the first conducted by our new president, Earlene McClure. After the invocation by Ed Baucom and pledge of allegiance, Earlene introduced us all by name, no easy feat! This being Annual FAA Appreciation Night, speaker coordinator Marvin Moore introduced five members of the Kansas City FSDO, Allan Martens, Acting General Aviation Supervisor, as well as Steve Davis and wife Cathy, Larry Wahl, Tom Bartels and Ernie Jarvis. Allan was substituting for another member who was to give a brief overview of the new regulatory requirements concerning Light-Sport aircraft. This new category will include light aircraft up to 1,232 lbs. max gross weight and two seats max. Allan brought some handy-dandy phone / e-mail lists and website addresses for making contact with the FSDO and other organizations quick and easy. We were invited to take copies of the May issue of the FAA magazine as well. Steve Davis gave us a rundown of a typical schedule for the week after which Allan agreed that the inspectors were a busy bunch, spending about 25% of their time in enforcement and the rest in customer service. They would like to get the later up to 100%. Steve mentioned an incident in which a nicely refurbished airplane landed at an airport he was visiting. Talking with the pilot, he discovered that he was still flying on a 12-year-old student certificate. Steve wrote a letter to him at his home in Indiana stating that he wasn't exactly complying with the FARs. The pilot responded with a two-page hand written "Dear FAA" letter in pencil that he had been flying for 40 years, had about 1,600 hours and had owned four airplanes. And…if a license was required, would he please mail him one! It's always a personal pleasure to touch base with the FAA professionals I had the privilege of working with. Thanks for all your great work towards making flying safer for us.

THE AVIATION SAFETY PROGRAM IS YOUR KEY TO SAFE FLIGHT, USE IT.

KC AVIATION EXPO 2003 — August 16 & 17, 2003 At Charles B. Wheeler Downtown Airport

The FAA KC FSDO will be holding a safety seminar Thursday, June 19, 2003 at LXT in Air Charter's new hangar. The presentations are entitled "How to Operate Safely on your Airport" and "Best Practices for Taxiing, Communicating, and Navigating at Non-Towered Airports".  The presentations are scheduled to be from 7:00 until 9:30 PM.  This meeting will qualify for the Safety Seminar part of the WINGS Program. If you will be needing a BFR in the near future, may I suggest you use the WINGS Program to satisify the BFR requirement.  Or, if you have never participating WINGS, now would be a good time to get involved.  Contact your favorite CFI and discuss the advantages of WINGS.

On Saturday, June 28th, 2003, there will be a Fly-In at LXT sponsored by EAA Chapter 91.  Breakfast 7:30 - 11:00 and Lunch 11:30 - 2:00. The EAA B-17 will be on the ramp and available for tours (for a few bucks) and flights (for a lot of bucks - call 816-358-1458 for info)).  Also aircraft judging until 10:30 for "Best Antique / Classic", "Best Homebuilt", and "Best of Show"  with trophy presentations at 11:00.  Come eat a lot, see a lot, talk a lot.  Invite your friends.  It'll be a busy place.  It'll be a fun place. (PS, please pray for a beautiful day.) Hope to see you at both events.

MO-KAN Wings Contest - Remember - Get ready for next year. All non-pilot members should attend a safety meeting and have a WINGS card signed. These are needed for our interstate rivalry with the Kansas Pilots Association (KPA). The KPA is very serious about this contest and won the trophy (furnished by Ed Duckworth) year before last. All non-pilot members should send their signed wings card to Penrod Turk.

The State Wings Contest runs from April 1st thru March 31st each year. Let's make the WINGS year WINGS Safe. All it takes is one hour of air work, one hour of takeoffs and landings, one hour of instrument and a safety meeting. It is the responsibility of each chapter WINGS Chair to keep track of all their WINGS participants. So — please — keep Chapter Wings Officer, Penrod Turk, informed upon the completion of any phase. (4 West 112th Street, Kansas City, MO 64114-5304)

MPA Board Meetings - This is a reminder that any member can attend our chapter board meetings . They are held on the first Tuesday of the month, excluding holidays, at Executive Beechcraft, Downtown Airport, at 7:00 P.M. We always welcome your advice and assistance, and the hospitality is great.

MPA State Board Meetings - Anyone can attend the State board meeting. Check the M.P.A. NEWS for meeting date and location. Make this your additional flyout.
