Fred Hulen Our April speaker, To B. Announced, was unable to make the meeting, nor was our speaker coordinator, Marvin Moore, so President Pam Ratliff asked for a volunteer substitute. Answering the call willingly, Fred Hulen told of a day he thought he was in the Twilight Zone. Having been set up for an 8 AM Sunday checkride with Ron Albertson, he told his instructor he would have to preflight with a flashlight at Lake Winnebago to be at Johnson County Exec in plenty of time. She asked if there would be any problem with that?! Nooooo! Approaching OJC, he attempted to contact the tower with no success, but continued to listen to tower, still hearing no calls. He also listened in on 122.8, but heard nothing there either. He circled around the airport some more. He now suspected radio failure. Using his newly learned radio-out procedures, Fred made two passes down the runway wagging his wings. No radio, no lights. It seemed strange, like the Twilight Zone! Since there appeared to be no traffic, Fred landed and taxied in, switching to ground control as he did. He got a prompt reply, and when he mentioned his trouble communicating with tower, ground replied they must have been kind of busy. "Busy, I'm the traffic!" Entering the FBO, Fred approached the counter to confirm he was still set up for the checkride. The dispatcher checked the sheet and reaffirmed it. She suggested some magazines while he waited. He kept glancing at his watch, and at 0800, no Ron, 0805, no Ron. At 0810 he approached the counter again to verify he was still on the list. At 0830 he went up to the counter to ask if she still thought Ron would be coming. At 0840, he was getting real nervous and went back to the counter to ask if they shouldn't make a phone call, maybe something happened to Ron. "Why, you've got 20 more minutes." How do you figure that, Fred asked? The woman said, "Oh, you didn't set your clock back last night with Daylight Savings Time!" Duh! Al St. Germain
