MPA Program October 2000, David Chaffee, COU AFSS - After we straightened out Herb Roberts on what month it was, (he blamed the confusion on his computer,) he introduced David Chaffee of Columbia Flight Service Station as a private pilot, member of the Marine Corps Flying Club, and an FAA employee with 30 years of experience in the Automated Flight Service business, including a short stint as a Briefer. Dave actually maintains the computer system serving AFSSs in the four-state region from KC Center. He used all his background experience as aviator and FAA professional, as well as computer slides, to remind us of some precautions on winter flying such as reviewing the POH, monitoring for carbon monoxide, checking for water/ice crystals in fuel, taxiing in slush and planning for winter survival. He covered various aspects of flight service briefings with an emphasis on what information we will NOT receive unless we ask for it. He suggests a "Standard Briefing." He recommended filing a VFR flight plan, which will ensure that if we should not arrive within 30 minutes of ETA, a communications search will begin, followed by a physical search if necessary. All great advice from the wise to the wise. Al St. Germain

In 1996 there were 1,907 General Aviation (GA) accidents. Of all these accidents, only 2 involved pilots who had participated in the WINGS program during the previous 12 months! Each accident had an average cost of $30,000 dollars. Just looking at this information, isn't it worth the 3 flying hours and a safety meeting to avoid a costly accident? Participate in the WINGS program. It's better than a BFR
