Our October speaker, Tom Bartels, was no stranger to our group, having spoken at our last FAA appreciation night. His past experience as Director of Maintenance of a Part 135 operation as well as his flying time has served him well as Airworthiness Safety Program Manager at the Kansas City Flight Standards District Office. (That's what FSDO stands for in case you forgot!) Tom covered the all-important subject of winter flying, a good review in some aspects and many new ideas in others. Using a handout booklet, "Tips on Winter Flying" and a Power Point presentation, he covered the weather, decision making, aircraft preflight, dress and survival. There is no substitute for good planning, good briefings and good common sense! We can always cancel the meeting, or fly low in a car, bus or train, but not in a plane! As usual, I for one, despite the fact I have hundreds of hours of winter flying and have given numerous winter briefings, never cease to learn something more about winter flying. Thanks for making it so, Tom. I know we will heed your good advice! Al St. Germain

November 17, Saturday - Independence, Mo. Landing @ 9:00am Yes the runway is still open, watch out for some chug holes at the south tip of the runway. The breakfast is terrific. It is due to be destroyed in February is lets say bye to an old friend.

December 1-2 - Anyone interested in a Branson Christmas on the date please call me and I will try for reservations.

January 26, Saturday - Iowa Aviation Museum's 5th Fly-In, Greenfield, IA. (Landing @ 12:00 noon) They have a nice small air museum (on the field) and those guys

November 14 — Chuck Zuvers will talk about the Flying Fez, the flying unit of the Ararat Shrine that transports burn victims to hospitals at no charge.

January 23, 2002 — Mr. Lee Lamar was a B-24 bomber pilot during the 2nd WW and was shot down over Italy. He was captured and spent the rest of the war as a P.O.W. He will tell about his experiences and will have some artifacts to display. Should be very interesting.

When you inter Jumpin Catfish tell them you are with the MPA Group and they will escort you to our room. Make your dinner reservations with JUNE WILLIAMS AFTER NOON AT 816-224-3241. Social from 6:00 to 6:30 pm—Dinner at 6:30 to 9:00. Cost is $12.00 per person. Please pay Marty Young as you inter the room. THERE WILL BE NO PERMANENT RESERVATION LIST FOR THIS NIGHT ONLY. Our menu will be a choice of: Two Chicken, Two Catfish, Chicken Fried Stake or Butterfly Shrimp.

December 12th Christmas MPA Dinner will be at V's Italiano Restaurant, 40 Hwy, Independence MO. Make your dinner reservations with JUNE WILLIAMS AFTER NOON AT 816-224-3241. Reservations MUST BE MADE by December 3. Social from 6:00 to 6:30 pm—Dinner at 6:30 to 9:00, Cost is $20.00 per person, Please pay Marty Young. Our Dinner Buffet menu will be: Baked Lasagna, Baked Chicken and Cannelloni Florentine, Tossed Salad, Broccoli Normandy Antipasto Tray, Hot Garlic Toast V's Home-made Italian Rum Cake.


MO-KAN Wings Contest - Remember - Get ready for next year. All non-pilot members should attend a safety meeting and have a WINGS card signed. These are needed for our inter-state rivalry with the Kansas Pilots Association (KPA). The KPA is very serious about this contest and won the trophy (furnished by Ed Duckworth) last year. All non-pilot members should send their signed wings card to Penrod Turk

The State Wings Contest runs from April 1st thru March 31st each year. Let's make the WINGS year WINGS Safe. All it takes is one hour of air work, one hour of takeoffs and landings, one hour of instrument and a safety meeting. It is the responsibility of each chapter WINGS Chair to keep track of all their WINGS participants. So — please — keep Chapter Wings Officer, Penrod Turk, informed upon the completion of any phase. MPA Board Meetings - This is a reminder that any member can attend our chapter board meetings . They are held on the first Tuesday of the month, excluding holidays, at Executive Beechcraft, Downtown Airport, at 7:00 P.M. We always welcome your advice and assistance, and the hospitality is great.
