Presidentís Message

This is my last "President's Message. New officers for the SGF Chapter will be in place after this month's meeting. The nominating committee, chaired by Jerry McClure, will present the slate of people willing to serve and I look forward to working with our new Chapter president and other officers.

It was an interesting year for me, but of more importance, was it a good year for the Chapter? In looking over the goals we set for the Chapter at our January meeting, we did well on a couple, not so well on others. We wanted to increase awareness and membership, prepare a history of the SGF Chapter that is approaching 25 years as an organization, and increase participation in the WINGS program. Roger Ferguson, one of the founding members of the SGF Chapter, is working on that history and we appreciate his work. Our chapter placed 3rd in the state and helped MPA regain possession of the MOKAN trophy. How did we do in the "increase awareness and membership" category?

In January, we had 72 members. The latest numbers show we are now down to 68. When the Bolivar Chapter was formed a few years ago, we lost several, many of whom were very active in the SGF Chapter as they continue to be in Bolivar. Increasing the number of chapters is good for the MPA and we should welcome members willing to put in the effort to start new chapters. Bolivar, only a few years old, now has almost as many members as SGF. We can't use the excuse of losing members to new chapters now; it is simply no new pilots are joining. Considering the number of pilots being trained, Springfield really needs to work harder to show the benefits of MPA membership.
Attendance at our monthly meetings is another concern. We have good programs, the flying stories told and retold are always good, and the visiting with other pilots a monthly high point. How do we increase attendance? Do we need a "phone committee" to remind members of upcoming meetings? Would a post card a week or so before the meeting help? Why not attend the August 21st meeting and share your ideas with our new officers?

Thanks. There is one area where the Chapter consistently comes out on top - our newsletter, KSGF News. Roger edits arguably the best chapter newsletter in the state and we owe a big vote of thanks for his continuing effort.
Thanks also to Earl Holmer for his presentation at last month's meeting on the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio.
August 21. I look forward to seeing you at the August 21 meeting!
