President’s Column – Ann Humphreys
I hope everyone who attended last month’s tour of the National Weather Service enjoyed it as much as I did. I found it to be both interesting and informational. None of the area pilots I have spoken with were aware they could tour this facility. Of course they now know that if they were an MPA member, they would know these things.
This month’s meeting will be replaced by our annual Christmas dinner and gift exchange. The date is Tuesday, December 14, 1999. Social hour will begin at 6:00p.m. with dinner being served at 7:00. The cost will be $15.00 per person at the door. If you wish to participate in the gift exchange, please bring a wrapped gift. The Chapters from Bolivar, Branson and Joplin have also been invited. This is a good time to relax and socialize with the other chapters, enjoy the holiday spirit and hopefully get a good gift!
On a personal note—Pro Flight Air will be moving into a new location during the next few weeks. We will be in the new building next to the General Aviation Terminal on the south side. We are making this move with mixed feelings. The new facility will be nice (it has heat, something we don’t have now) and the airport management is giving us no choice but to move so they can tear our building down for a parking lot. But there is a lot of history in this old building and for those of us who have spent the last 20 years here it will be hard to watch it come down. One of the steel beams in our building has autographs from soldiers in the army when they constructed it. They dated it 1945. We even have a "Kilroy" drawn on one of the beams. I know these old buildings are ugly and progress is inevitable but for me it will be with more than a bit of sadness when the bulldozer shows up.
