President's Corner

On Friday, April 2nd, the Petition Committee to Save Richards Gebaur Airport, along with Attorney Dan Franco, submitted over 14,000 petition signatures to the City Clerk's office in Kansas City. These petitions ask the City Council to either repeal the ordinance to close the airport or allow Kansas City voters to decide the issue at the polls. Now the Board of Election Commissioners must count and verify each signature to assure we have the required 9,250 valid signatures. However, we are continuing to collect signatures 'just in case.' We should know the results within 30 days. Then if this goes to a vote of the people, we need to educate them on the benefits of keeping the airport open. Be assured, the KC Southern Railroad will fight this, and they have the money to spend to do it. While the Richards Gebaur fight is going on, we are becoming involved in saving Lee's Summit Airport. Meetings are being held, money and volunteers are needed. If you can help, let us know. Contact any Kansas City MPA board member or anyone at the Lee's Summit Airport. We need to continue this fight if we are to save General Aviation. Herb Roberts

Friends of Lee's Summit Airport

Another airport, Lee's Summit, is threatened with closure. In recent months there has been a concerted effort on the part of a relatively small group of individuals to effect CLOSURE of the LEE'S SUMMIT AIRPORT, through a campaign of misinformation. These one-sided assertions were initiated and continue to be sponsored for the most part by one very wealthy and influential individual whose motives may be less than altruistic. We as friends of the Lee's Summit Airport, MUST make every effort to assure the airport remains active and it's expansion is fully realized. Please help disseminate the TRUE facts by writing to the Lee's Summit City Councilor or Karen Messerli, Mayor. Tell them where we stand in this matter. For additional information or facts, please contact John Ohrazda, Airport Manager at 969-7492 or John Sweeney, Asst. Airport Manager at 969-7492. You may also send or bring donations to Linda Pepper, Carl Kraus, or Ron DeJarnette at the airport. WE DON'T WANT THE CLOSING OF AIRPORTS TO SNOWBALL.

March 24 - Our March speaker was no stranger to any of us. John Ohrazda, Manager of the Lee's Summit Airport, told us of future plans for this suburban piece of pavement which welcomes our wheels so often and so warmly. (Several times on the same landing for some of us!) Using a copy of the newest update of the Airport Layout Plan, John told of possible building encroachments that the City of Lee's Summit needs to address, a future extension of Rwy 18-36 to 5,500 feet, relocation of the west parallel taxiway and two rows of hangars. An Environmental Assessment is being accomplished at this time to address noise, safety and other issues. He asked for our support in combating the Airport Expansion Group's efforts to close the airport with letters to the city council. (My personal recommendation is to show how the airport will bring industry and economic viability to the city.) Al St. Germain

The State Wings Contest runs from April 1st thru March 31st each year. Let's make the WINGS year WINGS Safe. All it takes is one hour of air work, one hour of takeoffs and landings, one hour of instrument and a safety meeting. It is the responsibility of each chapter Safety Chairperson to keep track of all their WINGS participants. So -- please -- keep Chapter Safety Chairman, Chris St. Germain, informed upon the completion of any phase. (9102 E. 50th Terrace, K.C., MO 64133) (Phone OR Fax 358-2150)

Safety Tip - t's the time of year when our feathered friends are just as happy as we are that winter is gone, and they're in the market for a new household. Your aircraft would do nicely. When you do your preflight inspection, of course, check all around the engine and cowling for nesting materials. Just as important, don't forget the tailcone area, air intakes, and wheelwells on retractables. Chris

MPA Board Meetings - This is a reminder that any member can attend our chapter board meetings. They are held on the first Tuesday of the month, excluding holidays, at Executive Beechcraft, Downtown Airport, at 7:00 P.M. We always welcome your advice and assistance, and the hospitality is great.

MPA State Board Meetings - Anyone can attend the State board meeting. Check the M.P.A. News for meeting date and location. Make this your additional flyout.
